Abstract:
Research on the detonation phenomena has been conducted for over one hundred years, and many important progresses in the detonation physics have been achieved. In this paper, the classic detonation theories and the multi-wave structure of cellular detonation are reviewed as well as the mechanism of detonation initiation and propagation. Then scientific meaning and limitation are commented and potential future research directions are pointed out. These progresses include the CJ theory and ZND model, detonation multi-wave structure, characteristics of the detonation cell, direct initiation and DDT, hot spot initiation mechanism, detonation stability, the propagation of the disturbed detonation, et al. Gaseous detonations are self-sustained supersonic combustion phenomena, involving shock wave interaction, combustion chemical reactions, turbulence, and hydrodynamic instability. Therefore they are very complicated and have also meaningful theoretical importance. On the other hand, the detonation achieves very efficient heat release and has potential applications in the advanced thermal propulsion technology, which constitutes important engineering background for related studies.

Abstract:
Advances in the study on shock wave reflection phenomena are reviewed. Some aspects of the advances are particularly elaborated in accordance with the research focuses of shock wave reflection phenomena in the past decade: weak shock reflection, wave con gurations and transition criteria of nonstationary shock wave reflection, wave con gurations of steady shock wave reflection, and the hysteresis of shock wave reflection. In view of their signi cances in practical applications, the advances in three-dimensional shock wave reflection phenomena are also presented and the problems confronted are discussed. In the mean time, directions of further studies on shock wave reflection are suggested.

Abstract:
How to confine detonations in a combustor is one of key issues in the study of detonation engines. Based on the controll schemes, the detonation engines can be divided into oblique detonation wave engine (ODWE), pulsed detonation engine (PDE) and rotating detonation engine (RDE). The detonation confined in the combustor is different with that described by the classic CJ theory in the aspects of general and fine structures and its self-sustaining mechanisms. In the present paper, analysis, comparison and review are performed on the fundamental structures of harness detonations, which is of help for the understanding and research on detonation engines.

Abstract:
Detonation physics is an experimental branch of sciences which is propelled by the development of test methods. In this paper, recent studies of condensed explosive detonation performance were elaborated, and the test techniques of condensed explosive and its application were both systematically presented from optical and electrical aspects. With detailed descriptions and analysis of the progress of test methods, development directions of the measurement and test technique are suggested.

Abstract:
Shock wave researches were traditionally developed as an element of high-speed gas dynamics supporting supersonic flights and atmospheric reentry of space vehicles. However, in the past thirty years shock waves have been successfully applied to medical therapy. This paper discusses firstly the operation principles of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and its mechanisms (i.e. stress mechanism, and cavilation mechanism) of noninvasion removal of kidney and urthral stones. Then the effectiveness of ESWL treatment to nonunion bone fracture, false joint, tennis elbow etc. in orthopedic surgery are reviewed. The theories and methods of formation of microexplosionand laser-induced microwater jets are briefly discussed with special attention paid on their applications to cerebral thrombosis revascularization. Relevant experimental setups are also enumerated for introducing DNA/drug and high-speed particles into cells and related results summarized. Besides, the idea underlying the application of shock wave to treat tendons, ligaments and bones on horses or dogs in veterinary medicine is presented. This review proposes finally the key research fields to be further explored, such as the new generation technology of medical shock wave, novel devices for shock wave therapy, and medical applications of shock wave to the cerebral embolism revascularization and gene therapy.

Abstract:
There are usually three dimensional structure in the complex flow flelds involving shock waves and interaction between shock waves and boundary layers. It is of low spatial resolution to study these flow flelds using traditional ow visualization techniques, such as schlieren, shadow and interference methods, and the three dimensional characters are usually hard to be identi ed. The Nano-tracer based Planar Laser Scattering (NPLS) technique is a new method developed recently for the measurement and visualization of supersonic three dimensional complex flow flelds. It has achieved spatiotemporal resolution, and is thus a good method for the measurement of complex flow flelds involving shock waves. In recent years, mainly with NPLS technique, we have carried out vast experimental research on typical complex flows in the area of aeronautics and aerospace, including supersonic flows over bullets, supersonic mixing layers, supersonic boundary layers and the interaction between shock waves and boundary layers. And advantages of the NPLS technique are clearly revealed in these studies. Process is elucidated in this paper for the application of NPLS technique to the measurement of complex flow flelds involving shock waves.

Abstract:

It is a new loading technique characterized as ramp wave loading developted to explore the rapid response of material at pressures, temperatures and stress or strain rate not attainable in conventional shock experiments, which was firstly developed on Sandia Z accelerator in 1999. In this paper, its principle; and progress in loading apparatus and methodology for the analysis of experimental data are presented, and its applications in the study of EOS data and dynamic response of material characterization are reviewed.
